There is hustle and there is flow, you cannot have one without the other.
Elaine Welteroth – More than enough
We often think that we just have to hustle and put ourselves and our health on the sideline. However, are we really showing up to our full potential when we’re burnt out and tired? I think not. We do our best work when we dance between the hustle and flow of life. You simply cannot have one without the other.
I know that hustle is the big buzz word of 2019 and you’re probably sick of hearing this word as much as I am. However, let’s just stick with it for now. I’m a big believer in hard work and giving it your all. Without the work, how can we expect results, right? Taking action allows us to move towards our goals.
Too much hustle and not enough flow
My concern is that a lot of us are living in the hustle and are resistant to taking a break and resting because we think everything will fall apart if we stop.
I’ve experienced this personally, countless times. I’ll be going non-stop and then I’d get sick or I’d feel exhausted and irritable. I’ve constantly struggled to balance the hustle and flow but this is something I’m now embracing now more than ever before because to be honest I’m sick of the cycles of fatigue and feeling mentally and emotionally drained.
The truth is, we don’t know how to switch off, but without embracing the flow in our lives we are leading ourselves into exhaustion.
Being in this state of exhaustion serves nobody. It doesn’t serve us because we won’t be showing up presently in our lives and it doesn’t serve the people around us because to be frank, exhausted people aren’t the nicest people to be around. It can ruin people’s relationships, health and lives in general.
Now, I don’t believe in a 50/50 balanced life. I don’t think life works that way. But I’m a big believer in working hard when we need to and then allowing ourselves to recharge. There are going to be seasons in our lives where we are required to work more than we rest but I don’t think it’s sustainable to never take the foot off the pedal. If you’ve had a season of hard work, give yourself a break, celebrate your wins and simply enjoy life.
How to embrace more flow in your life right now
Meditate at least 10 mins a day
Meditation is great because it allows you to sit still and quieten your mind. We are constantly bombarded with information throughout the day so it’s important to give your mind a break and time to breathe. To help me meditate I use an app called insightimer. The beautiful thing about meditation is that you can do it anywhere. Sometimes I even meditate in my car just before I head into work.
Keep a gratitude journal
This is the most powerful way (along with meditation) to bring your focus to the present moment. We’re so busy working towards the next thing that we forget to be grateful for our life as it currently is. Writing down what you’re grateful for each day is a powerful way to start your day. It allows you to connect to your feelings and how you wish to show up each day.
Take time for you
The work never stops, so it’s up to you to build healthy boundaries and give yourself a break. Do something that you love and that makes you feel connected to the moment.
Catch up with friends and family
Spend time with friends and family that lift you up and make you feel good. Get lost in inspiring conversations and the laughs. There’s no better way to nourish the soul than spending time with those you love.
Get in touch with nature
Go to the park, take your shoes and socks off and connect to the earth. Go for a swim in the ocean. Go for a hike and watch the sunset. Connecting with nature is something we rarely do in our lives because we’re so busy but it’s something that can increase your energy, nourish your soul and bring you back to the present moment.
Have a digital detox day
Have a break from social media. Delete the apps off your phone if you know you’ll be tempted to open them. Allow yourself to connect with reality rather than constantly being in the vortex of social media.
Do one activity per day that gets your body moving
Move your body in a way that makes you feel good. Whether that’s going for a run, to the gym, dancing in your house or riding your bike. It’s so important for both our physical and mental health to get our bodies moving. This also increases your serotonin levels which is the happy hormone. We all want more of that!
If you’re like me and you’re resistant to rest, I hear you loud and clear. Trust me I know how hard it is to allow yourself to rest, especially when you love what you do so much. But I know for my own mental health, I need to allow more flow into my life so that’s why I commit to building habits out of the actions I’ve listed above. These habits nourish me and help me be more present in life and also help me to do better work. In order to make the hustle count then we must allow more flow into our lives.
