How many times have you started something, only to get completely overwhelmed by all the things you have to do in order to achieve that goal? Yup, me too!
We often think that the quickest way to achieve a goal is to multi-task and to try and cram as much as we can into each day. To be honest, this is not the truth at all. This approach actually leads to more overwhelm, more procrastination, frustration and burnout.
The key to achieving a goal is not to try and do it all in one day but rather to break down the goal into smaller steps. When you breakdown a goal into smaller steps, it’s easier for your brain to digest this information therefore making that goal much more realistic and achievable.
The one thing method in action
I’m all about practicality so grab a notepad and do the following exercise:
- Write down your big goal, for example to find a job that aligns with my passion;
- Write down all the steps you need to take in order to achieve that goal (if you don’t know all the steps yet, write down as much as you can think of right now);
- Take out your calendar, whether physical or digital and put in only one action step for each day for this week. Repeat this step each week so that you continue the momentum.
- Each day do one action step.
That’s all you need to do to achieve your goal, just one step each day. Now I bet that you already feel so much calmer and like you can take on the world. If you do the above exercise, you’ll see how just by doing one thing each day will get you closer to your goal. You will gain momentum and you are freeing your mind from overwhelm.
You don’t need more time
The truth is we all lead very busy lives and I know a lot of us are not starting the things we’ve wanted to start because we are absolutely crippled with anxiety over time. We think that we need all day in order to move towards our goal. The bigger our goal the bigger our anxiety is around time.
But let me tell you this, you don’t need to work on your goal 8 hours each day. I use the one thing method in my own business. As you know I work as a lawyer 4 days a week so I only set myself one task each day that will get me closer to achieving my business goal and guess, this method works. This is how I create my consistent content whilst also working. Achieving your goal is possible and you don’t need to use the excuse of time anymore because even 30 mins a day spent on your goal is better than zero.
I hope this blog inspires you into action and you start you gain momentum in the process of achieving your goal.
