Ep.54/ Three Mindset Shifts To Make Before Your Next Career move

LISTEN NOW

You've made the decision to make your next career move (how exciting!), but now you're wrestling with resistance and self-doubt. It's a challenge we all face, but don’t fret – we're here to guide you through it.

The "Nothing Out There for Me" Conundrum

In my community and among my clients, the desire for a career change is a common theme. Yet, there's often a prevailing sense of hesitation, accompanied by thoughts that seem resistant, thoughts that we'll dive into in this blog. By addressing these mindset barriers, we'll empower you to make the leap and pursue that new role, whether it's a fresh career path or a step up in your current role or seeking opportunities elsewhere.

Shift 1: Focusing on Your Skills and Experience

Change is the foundation of your goal, and change often brings uncertainty, which can lead to self-questioning and resistance. It's normal to feel this way, but it shouldn't paralyse your journey. We'll dive into the specific challenges that individuals face when contemplating a career change.

First, let's address the notion that there's "nothing out there for me." It's common, especially in the early stages of a career change, to expect the perfect job to magically appear. When it doesn't happen as quickly as we'd like, we think that there's nothing suitable. This mindset can persist if you've been looking for a while without a strategic approach. But I've been there too, thinking, "there's nothing out there for me." The shift needed here is to focus on your skills and experience. Instead of dwelling on what's available, consider how you can apply your existing skills and experience to the role you desire.

You’ve developed a wealth of skills over the years, whether it's working in-house or in private practice or in any other capacity as a lawyer. These are transferable skills that can be applied in various contexts. So, start by identifying what you're looking for and how you can utilise your skills and experience to shape your next career chapter.

Shift 2: Building Self-Trust and Self-Belief

Another challenge is the lack of self-trust and self-belief. When aiming for a new career path, you may doubt your ability to secure that fulfilling job. It's natural to feel shaky when stepping out of your comfort zone, but you can overcome this by reflecting on past achievements that you didn't think were possible. Draw strength from those moments to bolster your belief in your capabilities.

Shift 3: Recognizing Your Value

Lastly, many of us underestimate the value we can bring to the table. It's easy to fall into a scarcity mindset, believing we have nothing to offer. But trust me, you have a lot to offer, and you can bring a unique perspective to any role. When applying for a position, focus on how you can add value, your fresh perspective, or the unique skills you bring. Recruiters often craft job descriptions for an "ideal" candidate that rarely exists. This is where you can shine by demonstrating your value and the distinct perspective you bring.

Wrap up

To sum it up, to shift your mindset and pave the way for a successful career change, remember these three key points:

  • Assess and acknowledge your skills and experience: Focus on what you can bring to your desired role.

  • Build trust in yourself: Recall past achievements, even outside of your career.

  • Recognise the value you bring: Communicate how you can benefit your potential employer.

Your career change is not only possible but within reach. By implementing these mindset shifts, you'll be on your way to achieving your career goals.
